Danskbog Bindery: A Legacy of Excellence
In 2014, Danskbog Bindery was acquired by Beth Thomas, friend and apprentice to native Dane and founder of the bindery, Jytte Norgaard Beatty, to ensure the continuation of a rich history and dedication to the art of bookbinding which began with Jytte in 1969 in Felton, California.
For over forty years, Jytte meticulously restored cherished books, including family Bibles, photo albums, and fine antiquarian volumes. She also designed and hand-bound special editions, and PhD theses, and crafted exquisite boxes and slipcases. Among her most remarkable projects was a custom-bound copy of the Dalai Lama’s book, which Jytte presented to the Dalai Lama during his visit to Northern California.
Beth continues the Danskbog tradition providing the full range of restoration and bookbinding services and instruction in bookbinding. Beth began her journey in hand bookbinding in the 1990s and has studied with numerous esteemed bookbinders through various institutions and private instruction, including:
Peggy de Mouthe at the University of California, Santa Cruz
Claire Van Vliet of Janus Press at the Santa Cruz Museum of Art and History
San Francisco Center for the Book Certification Program
Dominic Riley
Michael Burke
Rhiannon Alpers
Juliayn Coleman

Andy Rottner
Samuel Feinstein at the North Bennet Street School
Apprenticeship at Danskbog Bindery with Jytte Beatty
Danskbog Bindery is now located at Beth’s home studio in Ben Lomond, California. She continues to serve the bookbinding needs of the community with the same dedication and passion as her predecessor.
